[image]Frost-covered dunes
MOC image of dunes in Chasma Boreale, a giant trough in the north polar cap. This September 1998 view shows dark sand emergent from beneath a veneer of bright frost left over from the northern winter that ended in July 1998. Photo Credit: NASA/JPL/Malin Space Science Systems

[audio]Race for the Arctic - Foreign Policy Association
As Arctic ice melts, the opening of the North West Passage could be the definitive event of our time. Is the U.S. poised to take advantage of this new trade route and its vast resources, or is Russia edging it out? What are the ramifications of the great melt? Guests: * Senator Lisa Murkowski, Republican from Alaska * Jean Charest, Premier, Quebec * Scott Borgerson, International Affairs Fellow, Council on Foreign Relations * Ed Struzik, Reporter and Author, The Big Thaw * Caitlyn Antrim, Presid...

[image]North Polar Layers
Red Rover Science Team Caption: "This image is located on the edge of the northern polar ice cap and shows layered terrain which possibly could give us clues about the history of the red planet. This layered terrain could have been formed by the seasonal expansions and contractions of the polar ice cap. The top edge of the ice shows strong evidence of present wind activity." The picture is a portion of MGS MOC narrow angle image E01-00872...

[image]Springtime on the Martian South Polar Cap
This Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) wide angle view of the martian south polar region was acquired on September 12, 2001, four years to the day after MGS first began to orbit the Red Planet. The bright area at the center of the image is the permanent south polar cap---the part of the cap that will remain through the coming summer. The bright areas that surround the center make up the seasonal frost cap that was deposited during southern winter, which ended June 17, 2001...

[image]Spring Defrosting of Mass-Movement Material at South High Latitudes
MGS MOC Release No. MOC2-327, 04 April 2003 Southern hemisphere spring on Mars will begin this year around May 6, 2003. During the spring, the MOC operations team will be documenting changes as the seasonal carbon dioxide frost cap retreats southward. In preparation for this year's southern spring, the team has been examining images obtained during the last southern spring, which occurred in 2001. This pair of images shows gullies and associated scars formed by mass-movement down a slope in the ...

[image]Martian North Polar Cap
Mars Global Surveyor's Mars Orbiter Camera obtained its last SPO-2 images of Mars on September 12, 1998. SPO-2, or 'Science Phasing Orbit-2', took place between early June and mid-September 1998. Shown above are MOC wide angle (red and blue band) images of the martian north polar region obtained around 3:15 a.m. PDT on September 12, 1998. This color composite was made using red and blue wide angle MOC images 55001 and 55002--these were the last pictures taken of the planet until the camera resum...

[image]North Polar Cap in Summer
In the middle of January 2001, Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) completed one Mars year in its ~380 km-high (236 mi) mapping orbit. The mapping orbit was originally achieved in late February 1999. In March of that year, MGS conducted a series of operations in preparation for full-up mapping, first calibrating its scientific instruments and then operating in a mode in which the high gain antenna was held fixed against the body of the spacecraft...

[image]MOC View of the Martian South Polar Residual Cap
The portion of the martian south polar cap that persists through each southern hemisphere summer is known as the residual cap. This Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) image shows a 2.9 by 4.8 km (1.8 by 3 mi) area of the south polar residual cap as it appeared in mid-summer on 23 February 2000. The landscape of the south polar residual cap is dominated by layered, frozen carbon dioxide ("dry ice") that has been eroded into a variety of pits, troughs, buttes, and mesas...

[image]Erosion of North Polar Layers and Genesis of nearby Sand Dunes
The Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) is used by the MOC science team as a tool to test hypotheses about the geology, geomorphology, and meteorology of Mars. In 1999, MOC images revealed that the layers of the martian north polar cap are divided into two distinct units: an upper, light-toned sequence of layers, and a lower, darker-toned suite of layers. The team suspected that the lower unit, because of its dark tone and apparent association with nearby dune fields, might be a...

[image]Martian "Swiss Cheese
This image is illuminated by sunlight from the upper left. Looking like pieces of sliced and broken swiss cheese, the upper layer of the martian south polar residual cap has been eroded, leaving flat-topped mesas into which are set circular depressions such as those shown here. The circular features are depressions, not hills. The largest mesas here stand about 4 meters (13 feet) high and may be composed of frozen carbon dioxide and/or water...

[image]South Polar Cap
This is the south polar cap of Mars as it appeared to the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) on April 17, 2000. In winter and early spring, this entire scene would be covered by frost. In summer, the cap shrinks to its minimum size, as shown here. Even though it is summer, observations made by the Viking orbiters in the 1970s showed that the south polar cap remains cold enough that the polar frost (seen here as white) consists of carbon dioxide...

[image]Martian South Polar Pits in Layer of Frozen Carbon Dioxide
One of the most profound benefits of being able to continue photographing Mars in the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) Extended Mission is the opportunity to go back and re-image a site that was seen in the previous martian year. New MGS Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) images have provided a startling observation: The residual martian south polar cap is changing. The fact that it is changing suggests that Mars may have major, global climate changes that are occurring on the same time scales as Earth's most ...

[image]First THEMIS Image of Mars
This thermal infrared image was acquired by Mars Odyssey's thermal emission imaging system on October 30, 2001, as the spacecraft orbited Mars on its ninth revolution around the planet. The image was taken as part of the calibration and testing process of the camera system. This image shows the temperature of Mars in one of the 10 thermal infrared filters. The spacecraft was approximately 22,000 kilometers (about 13,600 miles) above the planet looking down toward the south pole of Mars when this...

This month's show is dominated by a special report on the Bush-Cheney Adminstration's ongoing assault on the environment. From mercury pollution to global warming to water privatization, the damage to our natural heritage is deep and wide. Also: Kevan Quinn pulls back the curtain to look at the linguistic antics of Frank Luntz. Quinn asserts that Luntz is the man behind some of the right's most effective--and harmful--propaganda.
